Masoor Dal(Red Lentil)

Ingredients

  • Masoor dal (red dal)-1 cup
  • Tomato - 2
  • Onion - 1
  • Green chilli - 2
  • Jeera(Cumin) - 1 Tsp
  • Ginger Garlic paste -1Tsp
  • Hing -1/4 Tsp
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/4 Tsp
  • Chilli Powder - 1/2 Tsp
  • Garam Masala - 1/4 Tsp
  • Oil - 2 Tbsp
  • Kasoori Methi (fenugreek leaves) -  1 Tsp
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Wash masoor dal well and place in a pressure cooker.Add chopped tomatoes,salt and about 2 cups of water. 
  2. Cook on high for about 2 to 3 whistles or until they turn soft and well cooked. 
  3. Once it is cooked, mash the cooked dal and tomatoes with a ladle.
  4. Add turmeric powder and salt to taste, bring to a boil. Once it comes to a boil, lower the heat and simmer for about 5 minutes.
  5. Meanwhile,  in a saucepan, heat the oil/ghee for tadka preparation .
  6. Add jeera and fry till it starts to crackle and add chopped onions and green chilies, saute for about one minute. 
  7. After that add ginger and garlic, Fry for a few seconds till the raw smell of ginger and garlic is reduced.
  8. Add hing,garam masala and red chili powder. garam masala powder, stir gently and pour this seasoning over the simmering dal. 
  9.  Garnish with chopped coriander leaves or crushed kasoori methi. 
  10. Simple and easy dal is ready to serve.
