Cow peas Curry (thatta payaru puli kulambu) Recipe | Tamil Nadu style (with Coconut)

Ingredients
  • 1 Cup red cow peas
  • 15 Sambhar onion
  • 2 Tomatoes
  • 3 Red chillies
  • 4 Tbsp Oil
  • 2 Tsp Mustard seed
  • 2 Tsp Fenugreek
  • 1 Tsp Cumin seed
  • 1 Tsp Fennel seed   
  • 1/2 Cup grated  Coconut
  • 1/2 Tsp Chilli powder
  • 1/2 Tsp Turmeric powder
  • 2 Tsp Coriander powder
  • 1 lemon sized ball of tamarind
  • Chopped Curry leaves 
  • Chopped Coriander leaves
  • A pinch of hing
Preparation Method
  1. Soak cow peas in 3 cups of water over night or soak for at least 2 hours
  2. Soak the tamarind in warm water for 30 minutes. Kneading with your fingertips, extract juice and discard pulp. keep aside.
  3. In pressure cooker add soaked cow peas with enough water , salt, and a pinch of hing powder . Close the cooker with lid, do not put on the weight yet.
  4. After steam is visible (will take upto 5 minutes), put the weight onto the pressure cooker.
  5. Wait until the third whistle of the cooker, at this point switch off the flame.
  6. Leave the cooker untouched for about 15 mins, during this time the cow peas is being cooked under the pressure and heat.keep it aside
  7. Heat the Pan in low flame, put 2 Tbsp oil and then add 1 Tsp mustard seeds, 1 Tsp fenugreek, 1 Tsp cumin seeds, 1 Tsp fennel seeds and chopped curry leaves and 3 Red Chilies one by one. 
  8. After a minute, sprinkle finely chopped 10 onions into the pan.
  9. Fry the chopped onions until it gets a brownish color and then add finely chopped 2 tomatoes.
  10. Mash the mixture in the cooker gently, mash (and cook) the tomatoes until it becomes medium mashed and then add salt to taste.
  11. And then add grated coconut fry it for 5 mins.
  12. Switch off the flame leave it for 15 mins.And then  grind this mixture as a paste
  13. In a thick bottomed vessel, heat the oil and put 1 Tsp Mustard seeds. After a minute add 1 Tsp Fenugreek and Chopped Curry Leaves.
  14. After one more minute, add 5 finely chopped Onions. Fry the chopped onions until it gets a brownish shade.
  15. Now, after a minute add 1/2 Tsp Chilli Powder,  1/2 Tsp Turmeric Powder, 2 Tsp Coriander Powder.
  16. Fry this masala for 2 sec then add Tamarind juice, Cook for 2 more minutes and then add blended mixture (from step 12).
  17. Then add 2 glasses of water then cover and let it cook.
  18. Once it starts boiling, add the cooked cow peas.
  19. Cook for 10-20 mins and then switch off the flame.
  20. Garnish coriander leaves
  21. Serve with Rice and chapati.
