Ven pongal | Tamil Nadu style

Ingredients

  • 1/2 Cup rice
  • 1/4 Cup moong dal
  • 1 Inch grated ginger
  • 1 Tsp mustard seeds
  • Chopped curry leaves
  • 1/2 Tsp Cumin seeds
  • Pinch of Hing
  • 5-6 Pepper corn
  • 2-3 Red chilli
  • 2 Tbsp Ghee
  • Salt as needed
Preparation Method
  1. Dry roast the moong dal till they begin ti smell nice.keep it aside
  2. After five mins wash both rice and roasted dal 2-3 times.
  3. Heat the pressure cooker with ghee ,add mustard seeds.
  4. When it starts to splutter then add cumin seeds, pepper corn, red chilli and grated ginger.
  5. Add both rice and roasted dal with 1 1/2-2 cups of water ,hing and salt
  6. If you want yellowish colour then add 1/4 Tsp Turmeric powder.(optional)
  7. Close the cooker with lid, do not put on the weight yet.
  8. After steam is visible (will take upto 5 minutes), put the weight onto the pressure cooker.
  9. Wait until 2-3 whistle of the cooker, at this point switch off the flame.
  10. Garnish with ghee roasted cashews and serve this pongal with coconut chutney or sambar
