Dal kichadi | North Indian style

Ingredients
  • 1/2 Cup Toor dal 
  • 1/2 Cup Moong dal 
  • 1 Cup Rice
  • Big onions – 1 no( chopped lengthwise)
  • Ginger garlic paste – 2 Tbsp
  • Tomato – 1 no( big sized and riped)
  • Turmeric powder -1Tsp
  • Green chilli -2 to 3
  • Red Chilli-3
  • Salt – as needed
  • Oil + ghee or butter – 4 Tbsp
  • Mustard seeds- 1 Tsp
  • Cumin seeds- 1 Tsp
  • Bay leaf-2
  • Pepper corn-5
  • Cinnamon-1inch
  • Cardamom-3or 4
  • star anise-1
  • 5 cup water
  • A pinch of Hing powder
Preparation method
  1. Wash and soak the rice and dal in 3 cups of water for 20 minutes. 
  2. In a pressure cooker add oil/ghee and add Mustard seeds, cumin seeds, pepper corn, bay leaf, cinnamon, cardamom, star anise and a pinch of hing powder
  3. Now add chopped onions, saute for 1 min till it turns transparent.
  4. Add ginger garlic paste, sauté till the raw smell evacuates.
  5. Add chopped tomato and mint leaves to it and stir until the tomato cooks well.
  6. Now add Green chilli, red chilli and turmeric powder.
  7. Saute for 1 min and add Soaked and drained dal rice mixture with 5 cups of water with needed salt.
  8. Close the cooker with a lid and pressure cook for 3 whistles, then switch off the flame.
  9. Serve hot with curd or onion raita.
