Dal kichadi | North Indian style
Ingredients
- 1/2 Cup Toor dal
- 1/2 Cup Moong dal
- 1 Cup Rice
- Big onions – 1 no( chopped lengthwise)
- Ginger garlic paste – 2 Tbsp
- Tomato – 1 no( big sized and riped)
- Turmeric powder -1Tsp
- Green chilli -2 to 3
- Red Chilli-3
- Salt – as needed
- Oil + ghee or butter – 4 Tbsp
- Mustard seeds- 1 Tsp
- Cumin seeds- 1 Tsp
- Bay leaf-2
- Pepper corn-5
- Cinnamon-1inch
- Cardamom-3or 4
- star anise-1
- 5 cup water
- A pinch of Hing powder
Preparation method
- Wash and soak the rice and dal in 3 cups of water for 20 minutes.
- In a pressure cooker add oil/ghee and add Mustard seeds, cumin seeds, pepper corn, bay leaf, cinnamon, cardamom, star anise and a pinch of hing powder
- Now add chopped onions, saute for 1 min till it turns transparent.
- Add ginger garlic paste, sauté till the raw smell evacuates.
- Add chopped tomato and mint leaves to it and stir until the tomato cooks well.
- Now add Green chilli, red chilli and turmeric powder.
- Saute for 1 min and add Soaked and drained dal rice mixture with 5 cups of water with needed salt.
- Close the cooker with a lid and pressure cook for 3 whistles, then switch off the flame.
- Serve hot with curd or onion raita.
